Anatomy of a Solar Installation

How solar components fit together and connect to the electricity grid to power your home

Home Solar System Diagram

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels sit on your roof and capture sun rays, which they convert to direct current (DC) energy. Zenernet uses Tier One solar panels in a sleek black-on-black design that work efficiently and look great on your roof.

The DC energy generated by your solar panels is passed through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) energy that you can use in your home. Zenernet uses best-in-class inverters that maximize the amount of usable power output from your system.

A monitoring system attached to your inverter allows you to keep tabs on your system’s production and output. In addition to basic solar monitoring, Zenernet has partnered with Sense to integrate smart home management with your system. Sense allows you to monitor energy consumption right down to the device or appliance, which gives you more control over your energy use and allows you to get even more value from your Zenernet system.

Frequently Asked Solar Questions

A solar installation pays dividends in more ways than one – in addition to decreasing your energy bill, going solar can improve the value of your home. A data analysis by Berkely Lab and the U.S. Department of Energy showed that home buyers were willing to pay a premium for homes already equipped with solar panels.

The lifespan of a solar installation depends on the local environment and the durability of the panels and hardware used in the system – which is why we use only Tier One panels and best-in-class hardware. Our systems are warrantied for 25 years, and all production and savings estimates are calculated for that period. However, it’s likely that your system will continue to produce well beyond 25 years.

Your solar installation will require very little maintenance. Periodic washing may help maximize production, especially if you live in an area where dust or pollen accumulates on your panels. If your panels are not performing for any other reason, you’ll be able to contact Zenernet through your homeowner portal for support and maintenance.

At night and on cloudy or rainy days, your system will produce less power or no power at all. Your home will still be connected to the grid, so you don’t have to worry about losing power when the sun isn’t out.

When the sun is shining, your system may produce more electricity than you can use. Since your home will still be connected to your utility, this excess power will be sent back onto the grid for use by other consumers. Most of the time, your utility will either compensate you for the power generated or will amass credits for you to use when your system isn’t producing as much.

Net metering is one of the most common systems utilities use for billing customers with solar panels on their homes. If you live in a net metering utility, when your system is producing more power than your home is using, your meter will spin backwards, counting the amount of energy you’re sending back onto the grid. This way, when your home is using more power than your system is producing, you will use the credits you’ve built up from excess production before you’re billed for energy. At the end of the month, you’ll be billed for your “net” energy usage – your consumption minus your system’s production.
